Jim Corbett Safari Zones: Which One Should You Actually Pick?

If you're planning a trip to Jim Corbett National Park and feeling confused about which zone to pick, you're not alone. Every single day, guests call our Ramnagar office asking: “Which zone is best for tiger sightings?” or “Is Dhikala really worth the extra money?”

As local travel operators based right here in Ramnagar (just 8km from the Bijrani gate), we see safari permits booked, cancelled, and experienced every day of the season. Here is our honest, no-fluff guide to all major zones.

1. Bijrani Zone — Best All-Rounder for First-Timers

Bijrani is our #1 recommendation for families and first-time visitors. The gate is located at Amdanda, just 1km from Ramnagar town. The terrain consists of open grasslands (chaur) and dense Sal forests.

• Best for: Day Jeep Safaris (Morning & Afternoon)
• Safari Timing: 6:00 AM – 9:30 AM | 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM
• Tiger Sightings: Excellent during winter (Nov–Feb) and summer (Mar–June)
• Our Take: Easy access from town, scenic terrain, and very high sighting consistency.

2. Dhikala Zone — The Legendary Core Forest

Dhikala is the largest and most famous zone inside Jim Corbett. Located deep inside the core area along the Ramganga reservoir, it offers breathtaking landscape views and rich wildlife diversity.

• Canter Safari: Available for day visitors (16-seater shared safari bus).
• Jeep Safari: ONLY available if you have an official Forest Rest House (FRH) night stay permit.
• Open Season: November 15 to June 15 (closes completely during monsoon).
• Our Take: If you get a night stay permit inside Dhikala FRH, take it. If not, don't stress — a Bijrani jeep safari often yields equal tiger sightings.

3. Jhirna Zone — Open All Year Round

Located 16km from Ramnagar, Jhirna was added to the park in 1994. Unlike Dhikala and Bijrani, Jhirna remains open throughout the year, including the monsoon season (subject to weather/road conditions).

• Key Attraction: High sloth bear population and large elephant herds.
• Best For: Monsoon travelers (July–October) when other zones are closed.

4. Dhela & Durga Devi Zones — Quiet & Scenic

Dhela is known for its wetland biodiversity and birdlife, while Durga Devi is hilly and ideal for mahseer fish spotting along the Mandal river. Both offer peaceful safaris with fewer vehicles.
